Facebook is yet again trying to make profits from its platform, but this time not through ads but through group membership. In particular, Facebook will now let group administrators start charging $4.99 to $29.99 a month for exclusive membership in certain groups.
As the company said in a statement:
“We know that admins invest their time and energy to maintain their groups and some have told us that they would like tools to help them continue to invest in their community and offer more to members”
This membership trial will be done to specific groups and Facebook wants to test the people’s reactions as none of the money from these subscriptions will be landing in Facebook’s pockets, the company is seemingly just intent on building and supporting these communities, but this is not to say it won’t profit down the line.
While the trial is currently closed to the selected pilot groups, the company wants to test if they prove successful and financially viable and at the same time Apple and Google will be taking a percentage of user subscriptions fees via iOS and Android apps.
Who knows, maybe this is the first step in making Facebook a membership platform.
