Astronomers have photographed for the first time in the history of Humanity a black hole, this cosmic abyss with such a powerful gravitational field that leaves neither the light to escape.
As Dr. France A. Cordova, this is a huge day for Astrophysics, as we have seen what it was not possible to see until today. The black holes have always attracted imagination, have exotic qualities and are mysterious to us. However, with remarks like today, we will be able to learn some of their secrets.
The image shows a faint light ring surrounding a dark black circle in the center of the Messier 87 galaxy, which is about 55 million light-years away from Earth. Obtaining the image was not an easy task, as they had to observe Messier 87, where a black hole 6.5 billion times bigger than the Sun creates a violent wave spanning 5,000 light-years in space.
It took the combination of 8 telescopes worldwide, the so-called Event Horizon Telescope, and the analysis of a couple of petabytes of data from supercomputers to get to the present result that confirms what Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity provided!
